Testimonials: Clients Share Their Experiences

Clients who use Mary’s services — therapy, workshops, training, coaching, media or institutions — not only benefit, but also enjoy the overall experience. They often report meaningful changes in their relationships, an accelerated professional development, or an organizational shift. They all report gaining a new perspective. Participants are elated about their gains, and many lives have changed for the better as a result of working with Mary.

A bit less than a year ago, following a series of unfortunate events in my life, I had reached a really low point. Emotionally, mentally and physically drained, I knew that I needed to find the strength to continue living, and out of sheer desperation, I finally reached out to Mary. It was the best decision I ever made.

Over the past 10 months, Mary has helped me experience growth that for me was unimaginable. In a loving and compassionate manner, she has helped me to identify both the destructive behavior patterns that led to my subsequent bouts of depression as well as the traumatic events and family history that contributed to the creation of these destructive patterns. Most importantly, Mary has taught me how to change these destructive patterns and replace them with positive, healthy, self-affirming ones. In less than a year, Mary has positively influenced almost every aspect of my life.

I am learning to identify and arrest addictive behaviors, replace negative thought patterns with positive self-talk and eliminate unhealthy behaviors and toxic people from my life. I am practicing self-love and becoming my “best self.” As a result, my marriage and family relationships have improved and my career continues to blossom. I have lost over 45 pounds and I am finally learning what it means to be truly happy, healthy and whole — mind, body and spirit. I am learning to clearly identify my goals and attain them. I totally attribute my growth to working with Mary.

Grateful in New York

There are people who touch our lives at certain points on our life’s journey. We are forever changed and forever grateful for having met them and for the growth they have helped us to achieve.

Mary Pender Greene is one such person in my life. A mutual friend introduced me to Mary during a time of deep personal crisis and turmoil. I knew I wanted to chart a new path in my life’s journey, but I did not know how to do that. I did not have the emotional arsenal, nor did I understand my patterns and the process of how to change my responses to my circumstances. This is where Mary’s gift lies. She helps one develop an arsenal to deal with the joys, the sorrows, relationships and everyday challenges that one faces in life. In the more than two years that I have worked with Mary, I have come to value and appreciate her expertise, insight, empathy and true dedication to the mental health profession. She tells it like it is when, and sometimes before, you are ready to hear it. Mary has been extremely valuable in helping me identify and build on my strengths. With her support, I have also learned how to target areas to work on allowing for more personal growth.

Mary is an integral part of my team that supports me in my quest for a sound and healthy mind, body and spirit. I personally believe the cocktail for creating an emotionally healthy and successful life is maintaining 1) your balance, 2) gratitude for your blessings and 3) openness to new beginnings. I recommend Mary without reservation, as she has been a true blessing in my life, helping me to maintain my balance and embrace my new beginnings.

Grateful in the Garden State

When I met Mary, I was in a very toxic and rather abusive relationship with a woman which eroded much of my confidence and self image. She helped me to see how many events in my life had brought me to that place, as well as allowing me to discover a much stronger, confident and self-loving person within myself.

I have been fortunate to work with her for several years now and she has helped me become the best ME I can. She always senses when I may be stumbling on my path of growth, weighed down by self-imposed negativity, and offers kind and gentle insights that are beacons of light in one’s dark thoughts. She always knows exactly the right questions to ask, or offer the tools I need, so that I may see the positive steps that I need to take, which are often before me. No matter how I may have felt upon entering her office, I ALWAYS feel ten times better when I leave.

I truly feel that so much of the success in my personal and business life has come from her helping me to see and realize the greatness of who I am. I could never thank her enough.

Mary Pender Greene is an amazing therapist. I’ve been seeing her for individual and couples’ therapy. She makes you feel that she is rooting for you to succeed in whatever you tell her that you are trying to achieve or overcome. She can be your cheerleader when you need her to be or your coach. Her style of therapy has been helpful for me in overcoming some serious long term issues that have plagued me over my life. My husband was a little hesitant in seeing her as our couples’ therapist since I was seeing her on an individual basis. He has found that she has been helpful to me, him and us. I would highly recommend Mary to anyone who needs a therapist.

Growing Uptown

Mary, I have a secret to share with you. Even though I am your client and I am clear about that. In my “head” I think of you as a friend or favorite aunt that I come to for advice. Thank you for your help over the years. I wish everyone had a Mary Pender Greene in their lives.

Mary saved my professional life!

I have always been an overachiever and I had a tendency to overcommit myself. This always seemed like a strength until I suffered from burn out and insomnia. This snowballed into anxiety and depression, and I began having difficulty making even the simplest of decisions. Considering I was a very involved father and husband with a high-pressure job, I had no idea how to manage these new feelings and still take care of my responsibilities. As you can imagine, I felt trapped. My job requires perfection because poor outcomes could ruin my patients’ lives, so I knew I had to find a solution.

I was blessed to have a close friend who was willing to tell me about his previous struggles with mental health and what he had to do to get back on track. This included getting a therapist. I reluctantly accepted his recommendations, but at this point, I was ready to quit my job and I knew this would turn my entire life upside down.

The first time I met Mary, I almost refused to sit on her couch and felt very defensive. In fact, I am sure I told her I don’t need a therapist and that “I am not crazy.” The stigma of mental health care really prevents so many people from seeking the help they need. Thank God I recognized that the journey back to a “healthy me” was going to require some humility and for me to do uncomfortable things because clearly my old ways were what got me here. Mary told me the one thing I needed to hear, “I have gotten others back to their careers, and I have the experience to help you.”

She was telling the truth. I had to run, I had to read, I had to grapple with truths I never acknowledged. Ultimately, she connected me to her network and her therapy, which allowed me to climb out of the deep hole I was in. I did have to take time off from work to achieve this because initially the therapy was weekly and my mind needed a reset. When I finally returned to myself, it was glorious. In fact, I felt stronger than I was previously. She gave me the tools to detect when I was slipping back into the hole, which has allowed me to keep my mental health in check. She was there for me during the pandemic and I still check in regularly to stay “healthy.”

After seeing Mary, I now encourage everyone I know to see a therapist. Mental health should be a vital part of our overall health care. Strong mind, strong body! Thank you for everything, Mary!

My husband and I have had challenges over the course of our 17 year relationship. For many years we thought we could do the work on our own but were failing. Recently, we reached a critical point in our marriage where we realized that despite loving each other if we didn’t get help that we may not last.

In comes Mary Pender Greene,
Her warmth, patience, thoughtful feedback, and ability to help you see your blind spots is parallel to none! She is kind and nurturing but still will hold you accountable to each other in every session.

Therapy with Mary has impacted our level of intimacy, which is now better than ever. We are taking emotional risks and experiencing each other through vulnerability and love.

Most of all, we have rediscovered our friendship! We are beyond grateful for Mary! She is truly best-in-class!

KG & TG

I have always loved my wife and I always will. But over the years, there were key matters that seriously and consistently plagued our marriage. We were co-existing, but we weren’t happy. We were “walking on eggshells” on some days, fighting on others. We’d see a therapist, make some negligible process, and then revert back to familiar patterns. Then we’d find another therapist and repeat the cycle. We both felt trapped. Condemned. And like failures.

I’m so happy that someone suggested Mary Pender Greene.

Trying to explain this to someone who’s never met with Mary is extremely difficult. It’s like one non-doctor trying to explain to another how medicine works. All I can say is, she’s got the touch. She managed to really listen to what was being said and done –and what wasn’t.

A few years ago, I felt that divorce was inevitable. Now, I’ve regained my lover and my best friend. We have the best of both worlds now: the excitement and passion of a new relationship with the trust and comfort of an old one. This year together far surpasses our honeymoon and our first years and we couldn’t be more grateful to Mary and her skill set.

A Surprised Believer in NYC

My wife and I were two people who loved each other deeply, but could not have been more different from each other. As I reflect on our lives, I must say I owe a large part of the happiness we’re experiencing to encountering Mary Pender Greene. I met her when my wife dragged me in to see her. I only went along to state my case and thought I would be told that I was completely wrong and the cause of our martial unhappiness. Instead I found an insightful masterful relationship counselor who was sensitive to my earnest, though awkward and miss communicated efforts to strengthen our family. Mary Pender Greene’s calming voice taught us to use our differences to enhance our life experiences.

Without Mary I doubt my marriage would have held together. With her help we were able to build a truly loving, trusting, intimate and fun relationship. As a result, I believe our son grew up in a loving family and has also been able to meet and marry a sane and loving partner.

Sometimes you can’t do it alone.

W. -U.S.A.

Mary’s relationship class has enhanced my marriage by helping me understand my wife more and helping us grow closer. Now I know that a relationship expert can fine tune a marriage by pointing out issues that need to be addressed. Some examples were: 1) What to do if your partner doesn’t think the class is important? 2) How to fight fairly? 3) Take a week long trip once a year by yourselves. We take our vehicles to a mechanic for checkups and/or repairs. Our relationships are much more important. I didn’t think there was problem in my relationship. I found out that a relationship expert can point out issues that if worked on, can add spice and increase joy in all phases of my relationship.

Thank you Mary Pender Greene.

Testimonials: Couples

My husband and I were both packed and heading out the door when we came to the workshop in the fall…we attended all of the workshops and did all of the suggested reading and writing. It has really helped a lot, we are still together and looking forward to a future together and the next workshop. We both really thought that the relationship was hopeless and were surprised when your tips and techniques helped us to improve both our communication skills and our relationship. Thank you so much. You really helped us to find a way to remain together and begin to enjoy each other.

Mary “kept it real” in both the couples and women’s only sections of her workshop series” Making Love Last;” sharing snapshots of her 20+ years of expertise. My partner and I related to the material and we have incorporated some of her suggestions into our relationship. There is no doubt we have seen the passion, trust and connection blossom! As an individual I have been able to hold onto the concept of being and bringing a full (“fat”) me into a relationship, instead of a half (“skinny”) me hoping to be filled. I feel I’m a better individual and partner because of it!

S. –Westchester NY

As a pastor I am called on to provide pre-marital counseling for couples who are starting that wonderful journey of Holy Matrimony. Most of the couples that come before me have ideas and insights as to the reality of marriage; that it’s not all sunshine and no rain. However, there are those who believe that the feelings they are experiencing today will remain forever. Mary Pender Greene’s workshop on “Making Love Last” helped me to convey the realities of marriage, while at the same time providing couples with the tools to keep the love alive when the fire has diminished.

Mary’s tips on effective communication skills and the need for both parties to be whole individuals before marriage have proven to be invaluable. Mary is a reliable and highly skilled therapist, and she is someone that I call on for personal and professional advice.

Blessed & Pleased in New York

The support and guidance that I’ve received from Mary Pender Greene in clinical supervision has been immeasurable. As Albert Einstein said, “If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants,” and Mary is truly a giant when it comes to sharing clinical wisdom. Standing on Mary’s shoulders has helped me in more ways than I expected, and I’m so grateful for the ability to see further and more clearly in regards to my clients and me. The Right Supervision Indeed Matters!

I have experienced Ms. Pender Greene as my mentor, my counselor, and my life coach. She has provided me with insight and wisdom far beyond my ability to see.

I have known and admired her from a distance for several years. Eight months ago, I had the opportunity and the privilege to sit with Ms. Pender Greene and seek guidance and coaching around my career. After our initial consultation, it was clear that seeking her counsel was the right choice.

As a young professional, I found myself wondering what the next steps in my career should be. I wanted to grow professionally and had some ideas as to where I wanted to go; however, I was unsure which steps to take. After sitting with Mary I was given guidance and a structure for my career goals. I felt as though I had a road map. With her guidance I was able to plan and take purposeful action toward improving my career.

Within those 8 months I have experienced a life-enhancing shift in my career. My experience with Ms. Pender Greene has been invaluable. Mary is truly gifted in her craft. She has an amazing ability to extract the best you have to offer. I recommend anyone who is serious about improving his or her career to sit with Ms. Pender Greene and be prepared to move forward in life.

Moving Onward and Upward In Jersey City

It’s a great pleasure to wholeheartedly recommend Mary Pender Greene as an exceptional, world-class career coach. Mary is a gem! With a unique perspective that can only come from an in depth knowledge of many spheres, life experience, and a background as a successful executive professional at the highest echelons herself, I truly believe Mary is a rare find.

Mary coaches what she knows in her bones. Her profound understanding of people and personalities, in addition to her unique insight in regards to the nexus of work, power, race and gender puts her in a class of her own. The powerful inter-play of this knowledge allows not only sound analysis of any career related problem, but also a deep insight into personal traits and behaviors that may contribute to the problem’s existence and, by extrapolation, where that might spill over to impact personal relationships. I enjoy my sessions with Mary because I grow from each and every one. And far from being all doom and gloom, we laugh a lot too!

Mary delivers on what she says. Her style is clear, direct and without drama.

Navigating the road to ultimate success would be much more difficult without a trusted and experienced guide. Mary is my ally in simplifying the process of being a leader, creating ease and fashioning strategy that gets me to where I want to go.

Without a doubt, the complexity of the work world is dwarfed with Mary as my career coach. I move forward with absolute confidence, empowered by her wisdom.

Cracking the Corporate Code Up-Town

The day I met Mary, I had already spent 16 years in the New York State prison system and 31/2 post-release years adjusting to a world vastly different from the one I left as a sixteen year old. I had traveled the long arduous road from street violence, maximum security prisons and years of destructive self-hate that consumes so many young black men to reach Mary’s office that fateful afternoon 3 years ago. It was a meeting that changed my life and re-kindled my spirit.

I, however, was not very hopeful when I met Mary. I had been frustrated by the redemptive process and stymied by the pejoratives associated with being a formerly incarcerated young black male. Although, I was a Social Work student in a well regarded graduate program and had been trouble free since my release, my conviction history stood as a mountainous obstacle to my career aspirations.

Amazingly, Mary recognized my internal and external struggles within moments after we began to speak. Her keen insight and unique ability to connect to others helped, over time, to pushed back the shadowing sense of disillusionment and tendrils of despair that had crept into my psyche. Mary’s incomparable understanding of people and systems helped me to chart career and life courses that have been intensely rewarding. Mary has helped me find my voice and sense of a place in the professional world. In doing so, she helped me access a world I had begun to think was inaccessible.

Glowing with a Second Chance – Queens NY

Mary is clear, balanced and objective as she keeps you, your career goals and the myriad of possibilities in mind. She is skilled in the art of nuance, sensitive to what a person and his/her environment brings to a situation and able to assist in getting the best personal and professional result. Mary is the consummate motivator, giving validity to real life struggles around race, class, culture and gender, while never losing focus or cutting corners by helping you to keep your “eyes on the prize.” Sometimes we create the barriers and sometimes there are barriers within systems. I could always count on Mary to help me suss out the root(s) of the barriers — create internal and/or external systems to circumvent or eliminate them – in order to more readily reach my goals. There is no other like her!

Successful in Manhattan

I have known Mary Pender Greene for almost 20 years. She has provided me with professional coaching in various settings throughout all those years. What comes to mind immediately when I think of Mary is that she taught me a skill that is not often spoken about in the field of social work, much less encouraged. Mary taught me to brag. And more than the bragging itself, she has helped me to feel and to know that these things I am bragging about myself are true.

Each and every time I work with Mary, I learn something new. Even if it is the 1ooth time she has gently reminded me of a simple, yet difficult truth, she coaches as if she has never said it before. The experience of being coached by Mary is one devoid of judgement. Mary’s patience and generosity have allowed me to hear things about myself that while they may not always be comfortable to hear, they have needed to be said. The result of this discomfort has been that I have been gently or not so gently been nudged to the next professional level. In addition, these experiences have been among the most rewarding professional and personal experiences of my life. Mary personifies trust and bravery and her example reminds me to continue to strive to create value and meaning in my life and work; even when I desperately want to run away and hide.

Our organization is filled with well-meaning, mission-driven professionals who are passionate about making a difference in the world. In spite of many good intentions, we realized through a series of internal crises and external reputation risks that good intentions are not enough. We realized that our individual and organizational behavior had to align with our mission. Unconscious bias and lack of understanding about the experience of People of Color in the workplace were causing many of our employees discomfort and pain at work. Our employees organized in a variety of ways and requested that we address our issues with diversity, equity and inclusion. After making some headway and a few false starts, we realized we needed outside help and contacted MPGC. Mary Pender Greene assessed our situation, made strategic recommendations and she and her highly skilled team of multi-racial trainers worked with us to create a common understanding of institutional racism though Antiracist/Anti-oppressive training, workshops and coaching. Mary and her team continue to work with our organization to facilitate challenging conversations and guide us toward being the organization we strive to be. Mary’s experience, wisdom, and integrity are unparalleled. She brings kindness, compassion, and clear, direct communication to all conversations. She is strategic and has a breadth of expertise that is priceless. If you’re seeking to begin to transform your organization and understand how to address the most important issue of our time and work toward healing, I recommend Mary and MPGC without hesitation.

Grateful to have connected with Mary Pender Greene and MPGC, New York City, NY

My experience with the MPG consulting group originated with their selection as organizational consultants for the agency at which I am employed. Unfavorable audits had caused our organization to become vulnerable to sanctions and possible closing.

The audit revealed capacity development needs along a wide range of front line and supervisory practices, coupled with needs in the application of continuous quality assurance systems and organizational design.

Mary brought her team of highly capable administrators and practitioners with expertise in mental health, social services, systems and policy. She made them directly accessible to staff through a responsive mix of training, coaching, groups and case presentations. Additionally, agency business process systems, human resources and QA practices were all impacted. As an executive team we were challenged to define and demonstrate a clear set of values and be guided as much by clinical insight as by the urgency of regulatory compliance. The agency is a richer and stronger for its experience with the MPG Consulting.

Grateful in the Bronx

We are Faculty members of The Women’s Institution. We are an organization committed to recognizing the power of culture to impact us individually and collectively. We are activists as well as therapists/analysts and had long realized the lack of racial and cultural diversity in our own institution as a problem. We formed a Diversity Committee to further educate ourselves through reading, going to workshops, attending the Undoing Racism® program, and to explore ways to bring greater diversity, particularly women of color, to our organization as incoming students, as well as in leadership positions. Expanding our course content about diversity was easy. However, diversifying our faculty and student body was far more difficult.

Thus, we began consulting with Mary Pender Greene for guidance in this process. We came hoping for referrals of students of color. She gave that and so much more. She was consistently informative, offering different ways to approach enrollment, for example, to think about making conditions ripe for Women of Color. She shared her analysis of difficult situations we brought to her regarding teaching in addition to what might be pitfalls for us to be concerned about for Women of Color.

Her explanation of the vicissitudes of institutional racism has been educational and applicable in our process of growth. She gave her energy, expertise, wisdom and patience in moving us along and broadening our approach. Over the years diversity in our student body has increased as well as diversity on our Faculty and Board. We are grateful for Mary’s indispensable role in helping us achieve our goals and look forward to further work with her.

Delighted at a Diversified Institution in Manhattan

My nonprofit organization full of skilled, passionate professionals and community advocates was also full of dysfunction resulting from institutionalized biases, discordant staff relations and leadership, as well as internal silos. We were fracturing under the weight of our issues, but had no idea how to determine the diagnosis or remedy.

After a series of significant, internal crises, we engaged MPG Consulting. Mary Pender Greene and her team of talented, diverse consultants helped us to clarify our needs, as well as develop and implement a leadership development, and organization-wide diversity and inclusion plan.

Over the course of the engagement, our management team, via individual and group coaching sessions, explored why we were unable to form trusting partnerships or retain staff of color, and then implemented a plan to address both challenges. Additionally, our entire (rather large) organization was trained on important concepts related to structural racism, implicit bias and anti-oppressive organizational behavior. This has enabled us to have real conversations about the state of our internal culture and create policies, procedures and protocols to promote true diversity, inclusivity and retention.

The words above don’t sufficiently convey the transformative nature of the work of the MPG Consulting team. Our organization is moving toward a truly inclusive, efficient, and healthy internal culture where we bring everyone’s authentic voice to the table. We therefore have better staff relationships, thus creating a greater impact on the communities we serve.

While the journey is hard work, it is well worth the struggle!

Mary’s webinar on the fundamentals of building and growing a private practice was extremely useful to me. I now have an understanding of how and why I need to access additional support to get my business growing! Thanks Mary! — Safira, NYC

As a therapist starting out in the world of private practice, I found the information shared to be helpful in preparing me well for my journey ahead. Mary is a warm, calm and experienced person who talked through this process without evoking feelings of being overwhelmed. At the close of the webinar, I felt that there was much for me to do, such as, developing a network of referrals, sending my private practice profile to colleagues to review (VBOD) and thinking critically about the ways in which I can market myself by identifying needs of the community that are not being met by other therapists. I felt empowered and motivated me to move forward with much enthusiasm! –Sandra J., Inspired in CT

The webinar was thorough, informative, concise and very helpful. I particularly enjoyed your presentation style because it felt like I was sitting in front of you in person. — Gena J.
